How to Become a Certified Pharmacy Technician in 2023

According to the Bureau of Labor Statics the demand for Pharmacy technicians in the US is projected to grow by 38 Percent from 2020 to 2030, faster than the average for all other occupations due to aging population and the COVID-19 Pandemic which has led to increased demand for prescription medications and Pharmacy technicians. The median annual wage for Certified Pharmacy Technicians was $49,750 in May 2020, making $19.75 per hour.  

2020 REQUIREMENT CHANGES FOR PHARMACY TECHNICIANS

1) Fewer Knowledge Domains

Currently, the pharmacy technician certification examination covers nine areas of knowledge, this will be reduced to four areas in 2020: Medications, Federal requirements, Patient safety and Quality assurance, and Order entry and processing. These areas were identified as being essential to know in a wide range of practice settings.

2) Education, Training, and Work Experience Now Required

Prior to the changes, applicants needed only to possess a high school diploma to be eligible take the  PTCB Exam or ExCTP Exam, but as of January 1, 2020, applicants will need to have first completed a PTCB/ASHP Certified Pharmacy Technician Education Program or gained the equivalent in work experience of 500 HOURS working as a pharmacy technician before they take PTCB Exam to become Certified Pharmacy Technicians

To Become  a Certified Pharmacy Technician candidates must take either the PTCB exam or  the ExCPT exam

To be eligible to take PTCB exam , candidates must
 satisfy the following eligibility requirements:
1) High school diploma or equivalent educational diploma (e.g., a GED or foreign diploma).


2) Be at least 18 years of age.


3) Successfully complete a PTCB Certified training program
 or  500 hours of work experience within the field.

Passing score on the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE).

1) Be at least 18 years of age.
